I hate the way a room looks when everything came from one place.

We make about $175k a year and have furnished almost our entire house off CL and online auction houses. I have never had any bedbug issues. Bought some really fantastic wood dressers and bookshelves. They just don't make furniture like that anymore, or at least, they don't make furniture like that in my price range. These are high quality pieces with recognizable name brands. I bought a down cushioned loveseat from an auction house for $15. It's slipcovered now and looks fantastic.

While I wouldn't take cheap or upholstered furniture that I found on the curb, solid wood furniture that came out of somebody's living room I would not hesitate to buy. Solid wood doesn't have crevices. You are being crazy alarmist.

A cargo van can cost as little as $30 for a few hours. (i rented one to move stuff in and out of storage.) Totally worth renting a truck if you're getting a good deal on a piece, or if you can coordinate several pickups in the same several-hour period.

I recently bought a gorgeous dresser at a farmer's market and the guy was nice enough to drop it off at my house on his way back to his hometown. (I helped him move it into the house and tipped him $20.) Some sellers are actually businesses with delivery capabilities.

I'm the previous poster who furnished almost an entire second house on craigslist. We did rent a truck, but only for one day and picked up everything at once. It was still worth it. Total furniture collection/delivery costs were about $1500, including picking everything up and putting into the storage here, and then getting it to the second house.

My house also is 80% furnished from Craigslist. I have a home with a petite scale and the stuff in stores just doesnt look right. With a lot of patience I found gorgeous antiques at great prices. I did buy a beautiful camelback sofa - never even thought of the bedbug issue. It has been great. I paid $800 for it, but retail it would have been closer to $1500. My dining room table was $80 and it retails at Pottery Barn for $1000.

For those of you buying furniture off Craigslist, how do you transport it? Certainly, not worth it to rent a truck,right?

I make over six figures and I have bought several things on CL: Glass coffee table ($75), 8x10 rug ($100?), Ikea upholstered chair (maybe $150?), and a wingback recliner ($50). All in perfect condition. Also bought a dining table and chairs from a message board at work.

The key is to look at the home you are buying it from. If it's dirty and gross, I wouldn't buy. But if you are buying from professional folks who keep a nice home, you are probably going to be fine.

I have never bought used furniture but I hear you can find some really nice things at a bargain. Especially antiques.

I have so many things sitting in my storage in near perfect condition that I need to sell but haven't!

I do. Much of my house is furnished with Craigslist and thrift shop finds.

I am a lawyer, DH a professor, together our HHI is $200K. FWIW.

You'd never know that 80% of our home has come from Craigslist. We buy mattresses/rugs/upholstered items new. Our house is coordinated but not matchy matchy. People have been shocked by the steals I have found.

If you can afford to pay $1600 for a twin bedframe, good for you. I'll happily take it off your hands for $250! If you have the time, you can furnish your entire house- this area is so transient that there are thousands of things added daily.

I've also sold a ton on CL, you learn to know which people are PITAs and which are the no questions asked, cash in hand, trunk is opened when you walk in the door.

I'll also note that I've had more weirdo's off the local mom's listserve than the random CL people!

I've both bought and sold furniture on CL. Most recently got some bookcases. We wanted a specific style and searched regularly until something came up. We also check out estate sales as well. If you are willing to sift through the junk, you can find some beautiful things.
