How much stuff do you have (or rather, not have?)

Another option is to post an ad on Craigslist for someone to come and help you who has a pick up truck and offer to pay them like $100 dollars.

Shouldn't be 2000. I've never paid more than 500 for a local move.

We got movers through the emove site that contracts with U-haul. It's incredibly affordable - something like $180 for 3 hours, $60 per additional hour, or something like that. We have always had great luck with the movers we've procured this way. Some of them even pack. We have two small children and no family in the area - no way we're packing and moving ourselves. The last time we moved (four miles), it cost about $500 for the movers to pack and move us completely. SO worth it.

depends on the family, the household, etc.

that's kind of a ridiculously broad & sweeping over-generalization.

I completely agree. I am a single mom with a small child. I hired movers. I don't think it was feasible to do it on our own without family nearby.

Rent/buy/borrow a hand truck and some moving straps. We had to move two large truck loads 100 miles into storage and then 15 miles into the house. A few hundred for pros would be worth it, since the truck alone would be close to that. Once you get close to or over 1,000 you have to ask yourself if you would be willing to do it for that price. If they quote 2k and you make 100k/year you would be paying them a week and a half of your wages. I would be willing to put in a hard day or two for a week and a half pay. At the end of the day you aren't getting anything tangible for that 2k, just a 1-2 day convenience to make a crappy weekend slightly less crappy. But I am cheap, so you may have to adjust accordingly.

Agreed. It put friends in a really bad spot. I've lost a few Saturdays with DH while he helps out "friends" move. When your working full time and have little kids Saturdays, or any day off, are sooooo valuable.

IF, and only IF, you are very organized and realistic, you can go ahead with moving yourselves (with a few friends).

I will never consent to moving ourselves again, because DH is such an over-optimistic and disorganized person... never again.

It you have a lot of big stuff I would hire movers. I remember when we tried to move out of our 3rd floor apt DHs best friend almost injured himself trying to get our washing machine down a flight of steps. Not worth it.

We also had a significantly smaller checking account post-closing. Plus we had two kids. Since our move was just a couple miles, here's what we did: Packed everything ourselves, ahead of time. Spent about a week making nightly trips to the new house with the bulky/fragile/unpackable/oddly-shaped stuff -- pictures, lampshades, random odds and ends. On moving day, we had large pieces of furniture and lots of boxes, all of which could be loaded/stacked/unloaded easily. Movers came in 2-3 hours *under* their estimate. We saved at least $400.

+1

if oyu can buy a house you can hire movers. My time is way more valuable than free beer and pizza. I could be doing better things like hanging out on DCUM.
