We're a Nottingham family and we're very pleased with the school. We moved into the district before my kid started K because we toured our previous neighborhood's school and weren't impressed. There are lots of WOHM moms and dads. In fact, there's a group of moms who work in DC and meet up for monthly lunches.

I've found the teachers and the principal and vice principal to be amazing. Great communication and very responsive. Very attentive to my child who had some special needs. Never seen any bullying. It's a safe and secure school.

And I don't find the environment particularly competitive. But my kid's still pretty young. I would say that mine is learning a TON. Much more than I did.

Lastly, it's not very ethnically diverse. It's obvious when you look around the school but I honestly believe that everyone wants to change that. There certainly isn't any discrimination against people who look different (we are those people, by the way).

PP---that is my sense. Just not as beloved as Tuckahoe and McKinley, and some of the other schools that parents rave about.

Our kids' experience was ok at Nottingham (second child graduated last year). Ok academics, but we didn't care for the environment too much. Lots of competitiveness and homogeneity. No egregious wrongs or complaints, but both hubby and I agreed that, especially for an ES, it could've been more stimulating and nurturing.

Not the OP but my son will be redistricted to Nottingham from Tuckahoe and I have been upset about it for a while. I know he will be fine but we bought in the tuckahoe district because this was the school we wanted for our kids. Nonetheless, it has been reassuring to see that Nottingham is not as obber-competitive and prone to bullying like i have heard in the past.

The new boundaries for Nottingham and the new elementary school approved earlier in the month by APS look so artificial. I think I'd rather be at Jamestown or Taylor, where it seems like the boundaries recognize the neighborhoods more.

I can't tell you about Nottingham, but I can tell you that Long Branch and Barrett are probably the most diverse of the North Arlington schools, which seems to be the focus of your search. You will get more economic diversity in these schools than you will at Nottingham. There are definitely Muslim children at Long Branch and some South Asians (although not many, since there aren't that many in Arlington).

Both Long Branch and Glebe are only about 60% white, Barrett is about 40% white/40% hispanic. Those are the three most diverse neighborhood elementary schools in terms of ethnicity in N Arlington. The choice schools like Science Focus, ATS, Key, etc. are also fairly diverse.

Science Focus is not diverse.

ahhh-- yes it is. My kids class has so many different nationalities along with socio-economic diversity given some of the apartments that feed into it (yes--not just the high end lofts and million+ condos). Check out the FARMS numbers and demo which is public ally available.

What? You can't live in he district and go to a countywide Arlington public school unless you are committing fraud. Watch out--our countywide school has an investigator currently pursuing false residency claims.

I think what the poster meant by "the district" is the Nottingham district.

I'm the original poster. I meant the Nottingham District, not Washington DC.
