We have one and the kids use it a lot (ages 7-12). in that age range it is great to have something that is easy exercise and fun. I agree it isn't the safest thing and we get a little lazy about enforcing rules but we've had it for 5 years with hundreds of kids on it over that time and no injuries yet. It is kind of like having a pool - some risk inherent in it that you have to accept.
