I wouldn't scrap the name based on this, and I'm sure the OP already knows this because it's a family name. My grandmother's name was Caroline, and people called her Carolyn all the time. I don't think she really minded that much, but it took me a while as a kid to figure out if I had been mistakenly saying her name wrong!
