I am 25 so maybe this is a little late, but I suspect it would be a lot easier to keep my labia clean if I were to just chop off the excess bits. I can do this, right? Like, it's legal and everything?

Avoiding aids is not a mild benefit.

Easier hygiene. Circumcision makes it simpler to wash the penis. Washing beneath the foreskin of an uncircumcised penis is generally easy, however.
Decreased risk of urinary tract infections. The overall risk of urinary tract infections in males is low, but these infections are more common in uncircumcised males. Severe infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later on.
Decreased risk of sexually transmitted infections. Circumcised men might have a lower risk of certain sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Still, safe sexual practices remain essential.
Prevention of penile problems. Occasionally, the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis can be difficult or impossible to retract (phimosis). This can lead to inflammation of the foreskin or head of the penis.
Decreased risk of penile cancer. Although cancer of the penis is rare, it's less common in circumcised men. In addition, cervical cancer is less common in the female sexual partners of circumcised men.

I've read lots of responses like this and I have to question this response and others like it. I spent the day with my sister when her son was circ'ed and he was fussy and would cry every time he urinated or was jostled. I can honestly say that I didn't give it much thought at the time. 15 years later I spent the day with a friend and her newborn who was circ'ed on his second day of life. That baby cried every single time he moved, peed, or someone tried to pick him up. He was so uncomfortable and was in obvious pain. I can't say the same was true for my nephew but it certainly was for my friend's son.

I am by no means and intactivist and I only have the experience of spending the majority of the day with two babies on the days they were circ'ed. I think you need to prepare for a child who may be in a fair bit of pain. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. It's not like clipping a nail, he will be sore. Sugar water and topical gels won't fix that. Keep it clean and covered in Vaseline so urine and feces do not get into the wound.

Honestly, I think it's awesome that we subject newborn males to this. Shows them that women are in charge (and genetically superior since we aren't born flawed this way) from the very start. Circumcision is just radically overthrowing the patriarchy. Take that, men!
