Anonymous wrote:German PP here again - I've now seen a number of these threads, and it strikes me as odd that someone would explicitly be looking for a "preppy" name but apparently doesn't know how to choose one... Isn't that like saying, I want to give my kid a name that makes him seem like he's from a rich and well-educated family, even though he's not? I find that pretty pretentious, but maybe it's totally normal in this country? Or is it just because this board is anonymous and people would never ask anybody in real life this question?
(I'm obviously taking advantage of the anonymity as well, as I'm sure some people are going to take offense at my asking...)

These names and many of the previously mentioned ones are only preppy of they are family names that are middle names and used because they are John Brock Smith IV and Brock is used because his dad goes by Jay, Grandpa went by Jack and great-grandpa was John.
Otherwise, using these names is striverish and pretentious.

I like the idea of something preppy.....and I know there are plenty of preppy names floating around the DC area. What are some of your favorite preppy names for boys? I also like the idea of a name that means something in another language (for instance, Agape means "love" in Greek, or Leibe means "Love" in German, etc.). Would love to hear some ideas!
Die Liebe means love in German.
Der Leib means body or belly in German.
Either are horrid choices for a name.

Biff
Jock
Skipper
Scooter
Van
And with a tip of the hat to "Sex in the City"---Trey
Trey is the ultimate preppy name because it's the standard nickname for someone who's a third. It loses all preppiness if it's a given name.
Wrong... It's Trip.
