With this attitude, you should not be a foster Mom...especially to teen girls. While I don't consider them heroes, I respect these girls for accepting their responsibilities and raising their children as best they can (unlike the thousands of teen girls who abort their babies instead).

One of my best friends had her baby at 15. She had her next baby at 33. After the first one, she figured out where they came from and made sure she did not compound her problems with more of them until she was no longer dating drug dealers. It has been a long road for her, with very unsupportive, uninterested parents. However, she got her associates degree in radiology and makes a pretty decent living doing untrasounds. She knew that more babies would not elevate her out of the bowels of Newport News, Virginia.

NP. Life is not that simple. I had my first child at 15; second at 19; third at 21. Yes, all to the same man. Although I knew (and know) about condoms, we didn't really use them. Every baby was an "oops" because I relied too heavily on the pull-out method. Abortion/adoption was never a serious consideration with any of these pregnancies.

I'm lucky that I have a supportive father for my children (who is now my husband of 11.5 years) and am amazingly supportive family. I know that others aren't this lucky, so I always feel deep compassion for teen mothers.

Everyone knows the # of poor in DC decreases yearly and it's not because of increased economic opportunity -- it's because the new DC just doesn't have room for the poor and working-class. Let them eat cake (but make sure it's in PG or PW Counties!)

OP, I honestly do not know what the answer to this plight is. Some of these adults are in the situation due to their own making and unfortunately they brought innocent babies into a fracked up situation. I do not believe that being poor is negligent, but I do believe that many of these parents were very negligent. The children will suffer for the actions of the parents.

If you a full-time college student depending on scholarships and no job, why would you have a child. I understand that birth control fails. She should have considered abortion or adoption.

The 19-yoa with the three children should really have her parental rights revoked. I understand that at 14 she was probably neglected and abused herself and that is what led her to become a 14-yoa birth mother. I cannot call her a parent or mother. At 19 she is desirous of a GED. I think social services should help her to obtain a GED and the children placed into the system for adoption, not foster placement. She is incapable of providing for those children.

I do understand that some of the families are the victims of hard times. But, I bet most of them made piss-poor choices and who should pay for their failed choices. Should the innocents pay and grow-up to repeat the dismal cycle. Should the taxpayers. Who?

And OP before you get into her hoity-toity tude, I too have given, as in past tense, my time to mentor and tutor. I too, as in present tense, give money and clothes to organizations to feed the hungry. As a matter of fact, such organizations receive it as my method of tithing. But, you nor I cannot throw enough time, money, and clothes at the problem, if somehow we cannot get the Asia's and Cruz's to refrain from having children when they can barely afford to care for themselves.

There are no poor women who think that a baby is a road to riches or that government handouts are enough to live on. The welfare queen for whom babies are a source of income is an urban myth.

And young single mothers are not the only mothers in poverty. Married mothers and old married mothers are also living in poverty.

Hey, this is what I'm doing. I, along with some other folks, are tutoring the kids in that family. Of five kids, two are on track to graduate from high school, a third has graduated, a fourth is in college, and a fifth has completed his graduate degree. And this is because we didn't sit on the sidelines and look down our noses at their mother and father.

Easy to be a snob but it would be of more use to get out there and help those kids who didn't do such a good job of choosing the right parents. What a piece of work you are, pp.

That is narrow minded. It may be how a few people think but there are in fact many other barriers to black people getting ahead in this country. The barriers for poor black people trying to get out of poverty are even higher. I posted at 13:25 because I thought the PP was in her example using racism inappropriately and such uses make it less effective when it really does apply as in this case. If you read my comment there, you will see that I am not one to call racism for any negative criticism. When it comes to employment and getting out of poverty, racism IS a problem.

OP here. Don't worry PP, you are a bit late because I already went there on the political forum which led me to starting this thread when I discovered that this homeless issue had not been discussed on DCUM.

I intentionally titled this thread 600 homeless kids rather than 900 homeless families to avoid having it sidetracked by the kinds of posts above saying it's basically the mom's fault. I am not interested in assigning blame. I have been very fortunate myself but not everyone has. Although I am not wealthy, I was raised by mature loving parents, got a good education and always had enough money for my needs. ike others above, I also don't understand why a single woman, would have multiple children especially at a young age but, recognizing that relative to them I have been privileged, I choose not to judge them.

Anyway, please try to keep the focus on the kids. I think everyone can agree that they are blameless in this.
