Kids should take the SAT II in May/June after taking the corresponding class, it makes everything much easier. Both DC did so and did not have to prep at all because they just took an entire course on it! Also DS recommends that anyone who's looking for a good subject test to take should take the US History one after junior year because apparently "anyone in a relatively thorough US history course can do well on it." Well there you go.

Unless DC if applying to Georgetown I'd just do 2 tests. Pick the 2 he thinks he'll do best in. If he is applying to Georgetown then maybe do two and two - he can take one twice to see if his scores improve. You pay for the test date rather than by the test so might was well make use of it. I don't think taking 3 at once is the end of the world either - it's shorter than the SATs which presumably he will have done once or twice by then.

Where is your college counselor? They really should be giving you some guidance on this. Our SAT tutor has also been helpful in telling DC which subject tests he thinks DC will do best on. DC is planning to apply to Georgetown so is stuck doing 3 but did one in 10th grade so will do the other 2 in June. The challenge with the May test date is that it is just before the APs start and DC will have so many of those tests to do it would be a distraction. So that's another consideration.

+1. I do think Georgetown is one of just a few universities, or maybe the only one, that requires 3 SAT subject tests. I'm pretty confident that most of the ivies require only 2, for example. The ivies and SLACS that DC looked at only require two subject tests. I suppose there is a risk, though, that some schools your DC wants would start to require 3 SAT subject tests in between her junior and senior years.

No school requires 3 SAT Subject tests. Georgetown and Hopkins recommend 3. Other schools like NYU will accept three SAT Subject tests in lieu of the regular SAT reasoning test. Many elite schools, however, do require two. As for what tests to take, check each school. So,e don't want two math scores, others don't want you taking one in a native language other than English, and other things like that. You can take all 3 on one day. Some savvy score-choice students take only 1 per day, because with score choice you have to report all results by test day, not by individual test.

The language Georgetown uses is "strongly recommend". I think you'd put your app at a disadvantage if you didn't take 3, don't you?

Agree- when we went to the Georgetown info session it didn't seem too optional unless you had some kind of extenuating circumstance.

People do get into Georgetown with two SAT Subject tests, even RD. I know two who did. One was EA, one was RD. I'm sure it's better to submit 3, but know that Georgetown will accept scores until the January SAT Subject test for RD, so you can always take your 3rd subject test just for Georgetown after all the other college madness is over. Hoya Saxa!
