You definitely need new or reconfigured fire dectectors. I once started a trash can fire. Small fire but it was like a chorus of fire detectors going off in our house.
Some sense fire, some sense heat (I think). You need to make sure you have both.

Just the regular racketeering: "Popular smoke alarms may go off too late, experts warn." So, after you are dead with your family, you will then know to specially seek some photoelectric smoke detectors.

Fire detectors have an expiry date and lifespan, usually regarded around 10 years. It’s not just batteries - it’s the source that degrades over time. Even pressing the test button doesn’t tell you if the source is working - it just ensures the system itself operates.
So, as far as timeline... house was purchased in 08... You do the math. I’d 100% replace them at this point.
As one PP mentioned, usually the best bet is to call the fire department for a walk though. They can check other things like positioning, etc. That are also critical. They can also make recommendations for a fire plan, which every home should have.

OP, I have a husband like yours. Getting experts to come out and talk to him is the only way to get him to listen sometimes. Also, after being married to him 20 years, sometimes I just go out and buy and install whatever it is we need without arguing about it with him. I just ignore his resistance because he is being an idiot and it is only $30.

70% of all fire or near fire deaths are from smoke inhalation. So it is a very big deal that the smoke detector did not go off!!

What do you mean smoke only goes up so high. That is a ridiculous thing to say. It goes straight up until the ceiling stops it. The NFPA requires that they cannot be more than 12 inches from the ceiling. That is the law not a suggestion.
