Definately! My nephew was wait listed last year. He wrote a letter to the Poolesville magnet program counselor stating why he is a good candidate to the x program blah blah blah. . . . . He actually went in before the wait list was cleared. If you know a current Poolesville magnet student, ask that student to submit that letter for your son.
You may think there is a list of wait listed students in number sequence base on their score, NO, it is not the case. Counselors have piles of wait list students, and they have sole power to simply pick one they see fit. Why not give them a reason to look up your son before he or she dig into that pile.

Does anyone know when the wait list is cleared? and if you are in the wait pool around what month should you expect to receive a reply from them?

For HGC and Middle School magnet programs the waitlist is cleared about a week from the accepted kids dealine to accept the program. For HS magnets it clears up much later since there is a much bigger permutation/combination of kids accepting a program, then beineg selcted from from waitpool, then rejecting the first program and accepting the second one etc. That is the reason HS coordinators asks students to let their intention known as soon as possible. I have heard sometime it goes on till the start of the school. It is also highly for waitlisted likely to be picked from Poolesville than from RM.

UPDATE: My son finally made it to Poolesville he is so happy.

For middle school wait list response section, there are several wait list durations. Student can choose to be wait listed thru the entire 6th gr.

If anyone in the 6th grade magnet move, go back to home school, leave the program for any reason, counselor will contact the wait list students.

I heard there is 30 people in the waiting pool per program. I think chances are pretty high.
