Main roads were fine, it's not so much the snow, it's the tons of people trying to commute on the roads.

Wow, when you put it that way, we should have a two-hour delay every day. And Los Angeles, too.

I'm a DC native and find everyone's pearl-clutching about this morning ridiculous. But I also had two important meetings before 11 am today that a 2-hour MCPS delay would have completely fucked with, so that's probably my motivation.

It took me 2 hours to drive 20 miles this morning. Both 270 and 355 was super slow. Traffic was a mess. One snow squall reduced visibility to a quarter of a mile. Main roads were fine, it's not so much the snow, it's the tons of people trying to commute on the roads. Plows and salt trucks couldn't get out to the minor roads which were quite slick.

Montgomery County seemed fine. Frederick County got multiple snow squalls and about 3 inches of snow in a very short amount of time. Many busses were late to school and there were a lot of accidents. Frederick County issued an apology this afternoon saying they should of had a delay to allow for salt trucks to get out before traffic got bad.

I'm originally from New England and I'm not afraid of driving in the snow. I actually thought kudos for everyone sticking it out this morning even though I personally wanted to tear my eyes out as I was crawling through traffic this morning. One thing to keep in mind with snow, people panic and this area has so many people cramming the roads to get to work delays so it makes sense to delay so salt trucks and plows have time to work. Cities like Boston know how to handle it and have the budget for it, DC area is still learning (although it's better than it was when I first moved here a few years ago).

You obviously don't work with data. The point is clear: DC routinely gets small amounts of snow, and sometimes much more. If you find an inch of snow too traumatizing to venture out of the house, move to Miami (NOAA funds zero historical snow accumulation) or become a recluse. Your choice.

How is it obvious? Thank you for giving me the two choices. I don't find an inch of snow traumatizing. I find it sensible to delay school opening to accommodate for a snowfall that fell directly before and during school rush hour and contributed to unsafe driving conditions.
