I think there is a difference between full-on alcoholism and alcohol dependence. He's dealing with that latter.

You and the PP before you do not understand or know what alcoholism is, do you?

O wise one, please do tell us. I'm the child of an alcoholic who has been through rehab and AA, but I'm sure you can enlighten me. You probably read a book about it once.

So I should be saying I have a half a glass of wine with dinner sometimes to be counted correctly?

Re: the OP's husband -- that's more than I could drink regularly, but I'm a woman of a certain age. My husband and I used to split a bottle of wine at dinner/into the evening most nights, and it seemed reasonable. (Age and kids made us give it up.)

Is he adapting his life to accommodate his drinking, or vice versa?

No. If he has 2-3 to relax that's no big deal. When they are alcoholics, they can't stop at 2-3. They would drink the whole bottle of scotch. Then try to get you to go get them some beer. Then raid the cooking wine. They can't limit themselves to a couple small glasses of scotch because it's not about enjoying a drink, it's about getting drunk and needing to. Speaking as the child of an alcoholic here, your DH's drinking wouldn't alarm me.

My opinion is he's a borderline alchi, if it doesn't conflict with other things like marriage, kids, job, health or household chores then I wouldn't consider it a problem. When the drinking starts to interfere with his life then it's time to seek help.

One or two beers do not equal the alcohol in two or three glasses of scotch. Good grief.

A shot (1oz) of scotch is equivilent to one beer. If he's pouring 2-3oz drinks that is a lot.

an alcoholic? He will drink a lot at family events where there is lots of booze, and everybody is tasting different beers and wines, but that is infrequent.

Trust me, people. If you drink two or three glasses of scotch every night for years, you will become an alcoholic. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones who can exist as a functional alcoholic and keep your job, etc. but you will still be an alcoholic. Lots of boomers are going thru this now. Try spending a week with your folks if they drink two or three each night and then let us know what you think.
