Whoops, just noticed this is an old thread. Doubtful OP is still checking in.

OP - I make about the same as you and as someone else also pointed out, I am super confused about your take home pay/commission/taxes situation. Do you pay for health insurance? It sounds like you are doing an amazing job and you have every right to be proud of yourself. I wish I could be so disciplined.

Please do consider retirement savings. Also consider that your current situation isn't static, so make sure you account for that. Definitely sock away as much as you can now!

This is great. One thing I would suggest is to give yourself some padding for down the road when your food and clothing costs go up.

You are doing an amazing job saving! You should give a lesson or two to the lawyer who wants to declare bankruptcy We keep our emergency fund in a FDIC online savings account ( think Ally or GE Capital) that has a higher interest rate than our regular bank. I like online accounts for this purpose because it is 100% safe and it takes about three days to get our money transferred to our regular account so we never use it for impulse spending. As others have sais, look into your company's retirement program and put in at least the match. You can save a maximum of $17,500 in pretax money in a retirement account next year which will help you save for retirement and reduce your taxable income-all good. You should also look into a dependent care account so your child care cost will be tax free. Keep up the good work.

I wanted to bump your thread to life again. It is an excellent, positive message for all.

Congrats to you. DCUM has accepted and loved you. But be very careful.

This was me 10 years ago. Now that I am wealthier, every time I post something about my life, a bunch of mean DCUM posters say that I am arrogant and spoiled and childish. Clearly, people will become jealous and resent your wealth.

He made over 100k a year so I don't think he was poor or his family starving, he was super duper cheap. Over time it really rubbed people the wrong way, and he was laid off in a RIF. I don't think it was solely because of it BUT his behavior got on people's nerves and it ended up tainting how they felt about him. Overall he was nice, but definitely cheap.

Bringing tupperware to take food home is odd. Grabbing a tray of leftovers at 6pm thats about to get thrown out is different.

Op here. Yes its $100 is for the whole month. My secret weapon is that I grocery shop at Aldi. When I first started I was floored with how much money I was able to save.

The day care provides food for the children so DS eats breakfast lunch and dinner there and I just pack and send milk every day.

Ive never been a big breakfast person myself but Ive had to force myself to eat breakfast since Ive been nursing to keep up my milk suply.

I keep a tub of oats at my desk and Ill usually make a quick bowl of oatmeal in the mornings to hold me over until the frst round of food comes out from the meetings.

The first round comes out around 11am and usually consists of orange juice, bottled water, bagels w condiments (butter cream cheese preserves), fresh fruit trays w melon pineapple grapes mango strawberries etc. Some days there are muffins, croissants, pastries. There are also ham and cheese hot breakfast sandwiches, sausage and egg hot sandwhiches, etc. By 11am the orange juice is not as cold as it was in the morning and the bagels are a little hard but I just throw the bagel in the toaster and its as good as new.

The second round of food comes out between 2pm and 3pm and this consists of salad with dressing cups on the side, bags of chips (regular salt n vinegar, bar b q and diff types of specialty chips), platter of variety of lunch sandwiches, platter of sweets cookies (sugar choc chp oatmeal) and brownies, bottled water, can sodas. By the time the sandwiches come out the bread is hard but the sandwich still tastes great. This is whats served most of the time but not always sometimes the office will order Mexican fare from Qdoba and there are tacos and burritos and this great type of Sangria mix drink w no alcohol of course. Other days the desserts come from Georgetown cupcakes, for example.

So you're the one hanging outside my meetings pouncing on the left overs?

My guess is she's wrong on her income - as someone else noted she seems to be mixing a bit of gross with net - and I'd bet she's guessing $100 for food.

The commission checks do vary and there are some months when I dont hit commission at all but for the most part I do receive a monthly commission check

Im pretty positive that I make 70k because thats what my w2 says at the end of each year. Granted its not 70k exactly ..one year it was 71k and another year it was 73k. I havent gotten my 2012 w2 yet but I anticipate that it will be on par with the 73k from the year before.
