Aldi used to be a hike for me (from Reston) when the closest one was Manassas, so I only did the trip about once/year to stock up. However, there is a new one in Chantilly -- so just sharing this info in case this is helpful to anyone like me who had previously written off Aldi b/c of the distance!

I like Aldi a lot. They have great things at the holidays (and after the holidays - like 99 cent chocolate truffles - clearance! - a weeka ago).

But hate their applesauce. It has high fructose corn syrup. Also they don't have whole wheat rolls or English muffins usually. Limited selection. But a lot of good stuff. Very reasonable cauliflower. a pint of cherry tomatoes for 99 cents! Fancy cheeses. Cheap cheese sticks. Great OJ.

I love Aldi too, and agree that you can find great buys on things that you didn't plan on buying--looking at you, dark chocolate, sea-salt caramels! But I do most of my shopping there and then stop off at Giant on the way home to get the stuff I can't get there, or prefer the brand name of (Laundry detergent, english muffins, coffee creamer, etc). Aldi's produce is better than Giant's and MUCH less expensive. I'm actually a bit nervous that after this thread, Aldi is going to be packed I like to think that Aldi was my little secret

Aldi is reasonably priced due to it not being raped by unions (like safeway / giant). Union scum bags have caused prices rise and they are attempting to overtake Aldii. Aldi has chosen to take a stand and say no to union terrorists! Hopefully the store prevails and the unions are defeated so that we can continue to enjoy good price and quality of food.

We are now seriously on a budget, and i have found it worth it to go to Aldi for most things. They are half the price of Giant or Safeway. I just bought a cart full of food for $84. Easily $150+ at my local Giant. I don't have time to cut coupoins, I prefer to go to the store where I know most things are cheapest. When I first started shopping at Aldi I heard alot of noise from the kids and DH about the "sketchy food." But ever since my husband went with me and saw how cheap it it, he's a believer.

Here is my ranking for the other stores:

If Aldi's off brands are off-putting, go to Walmart, were the brand names are cheaper. (I can't afford to shop philosophically right now).

Shoppers is next, although the stores are kind of gross. Their produce seems to rot almost before you get home. Magruders is about the same pricewise, but with nicer produce.

Target has cheap brand name food. Their up and up brand households products are well priced, too.

Giant and Safeway are for emergencies only.

Also, remember store brands are your friend .

Remember that Aldi's is a german company that owns Trader Joe's. I've actually found that b/c the brands are European, they don't have things like high fructose corn syrup.

Harris Teeter is incredibly expensive, in my opinion. And I find the quality inferior. For example, the last frozen peas I got there had tons of pea shell in then. Yuck. I hate it when DH does shopping there...he loves it.

I find Safeway has the best deals. Giant is slightly more $$, but I find their house brand inferior to Safeway. Target has very cheap basics and sometimes the cheapest bags of clementines or other produce.

Never been to Aldi...

I agree with Harris Teeter, but why don't we have any in MD?

There is one in North Bethesda

For produce I don't think you can beat H-Mart or Magruders.

"Just look at circulars and stock up. It takes some time but some web sites do it for you and it easy. Get a cheap newspaper subscription on weekends to get the coupons. "
