I attended Miami University in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Their moniker was the Redskins, too. For years people protested by the Miami tribe didn't object. Eventually, it came out that the tribe was afraid raising a fuss would jeopardize the scholarship for Miami Indians. When assured that wouldn't happen, they admitted they took offense. Miami changed the name to the Red Hawks.

When I was living in Alaska I used to see Native Americans wearing Redskins jerseys on a regular basis. True story. So not every Native American is offended. That said, I wish Snyder would change the name of the team because a) it does offend many Native Americans, and b) I'm tired of politically correct Caucasians screaming about the issue so they can bask in their own moral superiority. You're most likely Ravens fans anyway.

If you have to research 1957 westerns or consult an encyclopedia to be sure a term is derogatory, in contemporary terms by definition it is NOT. In relation to the helmets people just don't look that closely to such logos. Some helmets have zig-zags and lightening bolts. They are just logos and no one gives them a second thought.
