There is a book on this subject: Choosing the RIGHT College. Extremely helpful.

It's not a ridiculous question at all. A wise parent would want his/her son/daughter to be exposed to a wide variety of viewpoints at college and for diverse views to be credibly represented by respected members of the faculty as well as students. That's what college is for. Members of minority groups can feel unwelcome or uncomfortable speaking out absent a "critical mass," as the Supreme Court says (but may not say after this Term), and that includes people with minority political viewpoints. We all know that most of the most selective SLACs are monolithically liberal, and it is a shame.

OP, I'm in the same boat as you. I just want DS, who is a sophomore, to have some balance when he gets to college. But he deems himself a far-left liberal (which can be forgiven at his tender age). He recently made his way onto College Confidential and refuses even to think about any schools that aren't identified there as being far left. Middlebury and W&M, for example, didn't make the cut.

How do you know that your son shares your Republican views?

Maybe it's because the see the democrats/Occupy crowd graduating from college and living in tents in public parks.

Or, you know, running the whole country.

Hmmm...
I thought it was all those mean Republicans running the country. Glad to see at least one lib taking credit for the mess created since 2006

You know, don't you, that Bush was in office through January 2009? LOL!

(And I thought we banned "Hmmm..." among intelligent posters?)

I disagree unless you mean that they are permitted in the sense that non-WASP staff is permitted at certain country clubs. It is true that students may have different views coming in, but they are not truly free to express views inconsistent with liberal dogma. Conservative speakers are banned from speaking at universities. Professors retaliate against students who challenge liberal dogma. Anyone who objects to reverse discrimination is branded a racist in that Orwellian world.
