The hospitality industry works on the holidays. Hotels, motels, etc...

There is no place in the world I'd less want to be at on Thanksgiving than WALMART.

Cnn money has an article about how workers hate working on black Friday. Irate customers, managers too busy, etc etc.

I'm a cyber Monday fan. The black Friday craziness is too much for me - especially at these large stores where people line up and then go crashing through the doors at opening, literally injuring and killing people. No thank you.

I feel the same. When i was working in retail in high school, I always wanted to take the ot hours because of the pay (and most American holidays aren't a big deal in our family). Now my teenage sister loves that she is going to be working extra hours.

Yes to both of these. And when I was working retail, I hated taking the early shift. I would much rather work the late shift. I would have volunteered to work on Thanksgiving night in a heartbeat!

I worked retail in high school & college and most of my coworkers loved the holidays for the extra hours and money. There are still labor laws requiring hourly workers to have 8 hours between shifts, etc., etc. I'm sure some employees are upset to have to work on a holiday but I bet the vast majority are happy for the extra money. People working retail are used to not having a lot of flexibility in their schedule.

Not just hourly workers, full time staff too.
Everyone is not in the same position. It is more rare than commonplace to want to work on thanksgiving. And this time the workers have complained, and are ignored.
So shop somewhere else

I used to work at a country club on Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day. I'm Jewish, they paid me extra (holiday pay) and I was happy to have the money. For someone new to the country who came here alone, they may not care about Thanksgiving or have anyone to spend it with. Especially for hourly workers, HAVING to have the day off means no pay, and maybe they really would prefer to work and get the money.

No. I have never shopped on black Friday. It looks nuts and would not be pleasant.

While I feel bad for the workers, I can see why the stores do it. I have a greater chance of shopping at night then I do getting up at 5 am and going. And when I was a kid one of the thanksgiving traditions was shopping (all the aunts and female cousins). There was some Christmas store that was always opeN.

But will I actually go? Probably not unless there is something I was planning to buy that is on sale. I don't buy just because things are cheap.
