Lots of private employers don't give MLK off. Doctor's offices are usually open. Retailers are ALWAYS open. My employer (consulting firm) is open, hubby's CPA firm is open.
Racist

Because its a federal holiday- the federal govt shuts down its hard to be at your desk when your office is closed. BTW, fed are not getting a extra day off bc MLK day and inauguration day falls on the same day.
But that's my point. This is the silly kind of thing that gives Fed employees a bad name in the rest of the country -- extra vacation when everyone else has to work. Unless you work for the agencies impacted that day, it's just bad PR at a time when you don't need anymore of it.

Anonymous wrote:Looking ahead to inauguration day when Obama gets sworn in, it falls on Monday Jan 21th same day as MLK holiday. jan 20th is the official day for presidents to get sworn in but since it's on a Sunday, they will apparently do it on Mon. How's that for coinicidence and isn't it going to interfere with MLK observance and festivities.
It also means no additional day off for local fed employees as it stands.

Have you already used up all your use or lose annual?
My office doesn't let us take off whenever we want- so only a certain number of people get that day off. But if the government is closed then we all get off....
That's what she said.
