McDonald's french fries used to be good because they fried them in lard. They switched to vegetable oil in a (misguided) attempt to make them "healthier". When in France, I stop at a McDonald's there, just to buy french fries. They taste like ours used to taste.
It isn't vegetable oil. It is corn oil. Corn oil handles the heat better.

Why do companies do this? Why not keep the recipes the same and just raise prices? Or offer products at two different price points? It's not like candy is a staple for most people.

Aw, that reminds me of a former au pair from Germany who did the same thing - so sweet! And it's true, the chocolate was incredibly delicious.

A friend just got back from Germany and gave me a chocolate candy for kids. It was delicious. Wow are we missing out in the US.

yeah mcd fries taste gross to me now and I think they smell bad. Used to love them.
And the Girl Scout mint chocolate cookies, yuck, they used to be a favorite of mine but I think they definitely changed the recipe or quality chocolate, something, a few years back.

This is the OP. Thanks to the PP who posted about the PGPR. I bet that is it. Yuck. That just killed my interest in candy. All of these fake foods/ingredients are slowly driving me to a whole foods diet.
No- I mean my intent when buying a bag of halloween candy is not the same as my intent when i buy a chocolate bar to eat soon. I don't think the taste is as tied with satisfaction psychologically.
Clearly, it is too late for me to be on DCUM...

I agree, they don't taste the same anymore. I can eat just one now, whereas before they were like a drug for me. The same with Girl Scout Do Si Dos the peanut butter cookie. Used to be yummy, now I don't order them.
