My DH has a 2010 Jetta TDI sportwagen. He loves it and it is fun to drive. It's a actually one of the few VWs that gets high marks for reliability from consumer reports. We haven't had any problems do far, and he drive it 50+ miles per weekday. It also gets great gas mileage- similar to a hybrid.

Used Audi S4/S5 or pretty much any 3L+ BMW especially with the M sport package. I have a couple of friends who rave about the 335d, but you will have to buy one used.
The new Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ or the Hyundai Genesis coupe look interesting if 2 doors will work. The auto magazines like the Infinity G37S.

Do NOT get a Passat. We've owned two. One had electrical system weaknesses and we had to sell it after only 8 years or so. Both of them were money pits. $30 to change a headlight.

The top line Nissan Altimas (the 6 cylinders) are lots of fun to drive and right at your price range. They have lousy gas milage though .

What about the new Mustang?

If the Passat is the worst car ever, the Juke is the ugliest car ever.

Another vote for the Mini. I've owned mine for over 5 yrs without any problems. Occasionally, I get a false sensor for low air tire when the weather snaps from the fall to dead winter but that's it. I love having an oil change about once a year too!
