I've been on and off effexor twice and did not feel like a different person. It helped me a lot. I didn't have trouble getting off of it but I followed my doctor's careful advice.

I had insomnia as a symptom of depression and wellbutrin helped me a lot. But it is a bit of an upper so if your insomnia is not depression-related I wouldn't recommend it.
