I had a missed miscarriage in Feb or March 2003 with a heart that wasn't beating (embryo/foetus would have been 10 or 11 weeks). I did have to demand a sono; I thought something was wrong.

I thought I was miscarrying my 2nd pregnancy in October of 2003. I rushed alone by cab to GW. They did a trans vag ultrasound and there was a beating heart. Best. Day. of. My. Life. He is now 8 and a half.

Maybe they are now doing things differently, but I and scores of others who have children born around 2000-2005 are all saying we had vaginal ultrasounds very early in the pregnancy that indicated a heartbeat.

At the doctor I went to way back when, it was standard practice to do one at the first appointment. At my case it was between 6-7 weeks.

Pregnant in 2000 and 2001 (normal pregnancies) and both times I had transvag at my 6-7 wk appointments at Georgetown. It wasn't until my pregnancy in 2004 that they told me to come in after 8 wks -- which I was completely grateful for because I don't like the transvag.

PP - similar story here. I find it very distressing that OP would start a thread on this when she doesn't know what she's talking about. Tens of thousands of women each year have TV US's. Most of them went through years of infertility treatments to become pregnant.

I saw the heartbeat in week 6. He's now 8 years old.

Do you feel sort of foolish, OP? Virtually every baby that is conceived via IUI or IVF has one or more early ultrasounds. I had several because I had twins. Heartbreakingly, one died in the second trimester.

Since I also had recurrent miscarriages back in 1999 and 2000, which is 13 years ago, I had ultrasounds at 6 weeks. Believe me, looking for that heartbeat was the most stressful time of the appointment. The ultrasound was always done at the first appointment at my doctor's appointment regardless of whether you had history of miscarriage or not. Since the first one was born in 1995, with no miscarriage history, it was common.This was in NJ.

perhaps you practice does things differently. No reason to imply that people arelying. Just because it did not happen to you doesn't mean it is not common.

My son turned 10 this week. I remember hearing his heart beat. The doctor used a trans-vaginal ultrasound at the first appointment to DX the pregnancy, but I don't remember seeing the heart beat. He didn't point it out to me.

I have an 8.5yo and they definitely used the transvag u/s wand then. Honestly I can't remember how or when I saw or heard my son's heartbeat - it was either at the 8w or the 12w appointment. Personally I don't think the fact that Ryan remembers this experience qualifies him to run this country, nor should it justify his support for measures that would restrict women's medical options and decisionmaking on their own health and bodies. But I have no reason to believe he is lying on this point.

I had a miscarriage in 2002. The transvaginal ultrasound at 6 or 8 weeks revealed no heart beat.
I got pregnant again in October 2002. This time the ultrasound revealed the "pulsing cells" at 6 or 8 weeks.

My daughter is only 9 but I can testify to the effectiveness of the technology at least in early 2002.

I saw the HB very early, the first US at 6 or 8 weeks. but keep in mind, what you are seeing is the pulsating CELLS which will one day BE aheart. The cells that will make a heart start pulsating very, very early. That's not really a heart beat, cuz it's not yet a heart.

Wow. Several people, including me, are here saying that we, too, had vaginal ultrasounds 10 years ago. Are we all lying, too? To what end? To help elect someone whose social policies I find repugnant? Unlikely.

After eight miscarriages, all post-hb, I've learned that people put way to much emphasis on the hb in pregnancy. It's emotionally relevant, of course. The heart is the symbol of love. But you need a lot more than an hb for life as I've learned the hardest way it can be learned. How come no one ever says "abortion stops a functioning kidney?" All the internal organs develop between 6-8 weeks. You also need functioning kidneys and a liver and skin and good DNA, etc.

But consciousness, which in my opinion is the central and most meaningful feature of life (not hb) and therefore the basis on which it should be measured, doesn't develop until much, much later.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound when to date my first pregnancy (irregular periods). They saw the heartbeat and told me I was 6 weeks and some days pregnant. My DD is now 11.
