I don't think it's that hard for your dd to pull undies and shorts back up. My dd was in preschool last year, and we did the same then when she was 3.

I don't think this is odd at all. After my DD outgrew dresses with bloomers we switched to bike shorts. Call it what you like. I find it gross myself to see 3,4,5,6 yr old girls sitting in dresses legs spread with their underwear showing.

+1 DD always has either bloomers or bike shorts under dresses. In cold weather it will be leggings or tights. She's two and a half.

We did short bike shorts under dresses/skirts or opted for skorts if DD was likely to be running around or otherwise physically active. They probably said something because her lack of shorts was or was very likely to become an issue. I'd be thankful for the reminder, so as long as it was delivered politely.

Just put her in a burqa, OP.

This is actually pretty normalized at this point. Pull the catalogues for places like Hanna Andersson or Mini Boden or even Carter's and either the visuals show dresses with tights, leggings or shorts, or the write-up includes references to the matching shorts, tights or leggings.

It's not an unusual request.

You are right. Little girls should NOT have to worry about this. This is why they have mothers- the mothers need to take care of this. My daughter doens't need to worry about preschool tuition either because I take care of it.

Exactly. DD has worn Hanna Andersson scooter skirts with attached shorts since she was 2. Cute as can be, but plenty of freedom to leap and tumble.

I think its normal, and really just a way to avoid the no skirt or dress rule. I have a son, but it was quite clear that girls love skirts and dresses. So the schools allow them to wear them, but with something underneath. It makes sense to me. THey are going to do a lot of play, running, and tumbling at preschool. Why wouldn't you put something on under her skirt? There seem to be a lot of alternatives out there.

And shouldn't we be teaching them to not lift their skirts? Is this a normal request at this age?

Ok, fully admit that I've had a long day and might be confused, but...if you are not offended by - and in fact suggest - the concept of the teacher telling your daughter to put her skirt down because of a modesty concern, why is it out-of-bounds for her to suggest shorts for the same reason?

Has nobody mentioned that it is more sanitary and better for your DD's health... idk I have only boys, but I've seen plenty of 3 & 4 year old girls without shorts under and I find it really gross. It's just easier for rotavirus, etc to spread if multiple students are only wearing a thin layer of cotton between their bums and the seats they all share. As a former teacher (upper elem.) it seems like a totally normal request even though the students are younger.

1) Its the stylish thing these days

2) Little girls aren't and can't be "modest" while dancing, playing, having fun. Dresses just are not great for preschool play unless they are worn with shorts.

This isn't rocket science, just do it.

My daughter's pre-k teacher requested this and I thought it was odd that she even had to ask, I assumed everyone did it. Just seems practical for kids that are playing alot.

I can't imagine why this request would bother someone so much. Just pick up a couple bike shorts at Target. Better yet, wear skorts.

DD has normalized it and now wears shorts under all dresses.

Yes, but again - you're talking about older kids. The OP is asking about what is normal for a 3 year old class. Our private 2-5 preschool has never requested something like this.
