If you drove through the area you would not consider it a bad area but as a pp said apts are high density and they send a ton of kids to the school. Plus some of the SFH send their kids to private schools. The majority of my neighborhood does. My neighborhood is ~600 to 1M but some of the surrounding neighborhoods feeding to the same school are at least $1.5M.
Also, Where I live the boundary lines for schools has very little to do with neighborhoods. The lines are redrawn all the time so you might be in a 40% school today and a 5% tomorrow.

I don't know why someone would pay 1M for a home that is surrounded by poor neighborhoods. I know that exists, I'm not doubting you, but its not something that I find to be odd.
Wait, are you telling me poverty is contagious t now too?! I thought it was just homosexuality.
I am not the PP you are referring to, but my home is not "surrounded by poor neighborhoods." Our kids attend a Focus school. My home is in an affluent neighborhood, near other affluent neighborhoods, but also near some apartment buildings housing lower income people. Their housing is higher density than our housing, so lots of kids come from a small area of a few blocks. The majority of the area, space wise, is made up of colonials and cape cods filled with government lawyers and non-profit types.
