Finally got around to seeing this speech tonight (had DVRed it but hadn't seen it yet) and I can't completely put my finger on it but there was something odd about the delivery. I had several thoughts:
1) You know how sometimes a country singer will sing a very sad song and smile while he or she is doing it? There was a little of that going on - Romney talking about difficult things but with a slight smile. Like his presentation of self didn't match the gravity of what he was talking about.
2) There was an aspect of it that reminded me of a great aunt who disapproves of what you do but is being so "disappointed" about it rather than getting mad at you -- maybe, passive aggressive?
3) Also it made me think of Ward Cleaver, the dad on on "Leave it to Beaver," who as I recall (saw it many years ago, so I could be recalling it wrong) never got angry, just disappointed.
Ultimately it's not always presentation of self that tells you whether someone is a good president or not - because presidents do other things besides giving speeches. When I read the Washington Post article about the kinds of things Romney did as a volunteer in the Mormon church, I was impressed by his ability to lead - so maybe he could be a good leader despite the fact that his speeches are off. But like it or not, speaking ability and the ability to come across as authentic (even if you're lying through your teeth) is really an important part of getting political support, and he really seems to struggle with it.
FWIW - I disagree completely with his policies and I would never vote for him but I am trying to evaluate him as a leader separate from his policies. And, pp, I think you're right, he just seems "off."
