OMG, I hadnt gone that way in a LONG time. Drove it a few weeks ago during a weekday around 5:30. It was fucking hell! NEVER AGAIN!

Just got call for 2R (was in the low 40s on wait list for PS3). So thankful they added a new classroom. I'm taking the spot. I will be giving up spot at Appletree-OK, which was the only call I had received this summer. I'm in the low 20s for IT but 2R is closer to home and work. I'm doing the happy feet dance because this has been so stressful over the last year, i.e., open houses, lottery, no spot, wait listed, etc. Now I can schedule my calendar and leave schedule.

TR is an awesome school, but if you've got a great option one block away from your home, you should really give it strong consideration. We love TR and so do our kids, but we sure wish we had a great school in our neighborhood. P.S. I agree about the traffic hassles, but TR is very metro accessible if that is an option for you.

OP, we were in a similar spot, choosing between TR and another newer, but highly regarded, charter. We chose the latter. The Florida Ave. Two Rivers location is horrible, as is the playground for the young kids. Unless you live extremely close to TR, I do not understand the appeal. Good luck with your choice.

I would take the IT spot, especially given your commute. I think both schools are excellent, especially in the lower grade levels. I have heard criticism of 2r as the grades move upward as well, although I do not have a child at either school. If you are a parent who wants to be involved in pts, etc, I also think a longer commute could be prohibitive. At any rate, I would personally love to be in your shoes, being able to choose from 2 great schools. You and DC will be happy wherever you choose!

Don't just label the charters. This also applies to a large many traditional public schools.

Solid instruction should allow anyone to do well on the DC CAS. Test prep is somewhat important, but it's not going to make a huge statistical difference. Sometimes we in DC are so desperate for a school to be "good" that we make all kinds of excuses for mediocrity, which is a category that many charters fall into.

Take a deep breath. Yes, the IT scores were disappointingly low. They are for a leading class with a low number of students in a first year school. The real test for IT is how well this same group of students does next year in 4th grade, with teachers and admin and children all knowing more now about the DC-CAS than they did before, and how the incoming 3rd does in 2013 with two years of IT instruction.

Tough decision. The IT scores would scare me for K and older.

You don't want to do the drive from where you are to TR 2x a day. Crossing NY ave is sheer torture. A one block walk vs that is no contest especially for a three yr old.
