My experience with both of my kids is that this is learned, not intuitive so I would disagree with your assertion that "gay marriage doesn't make sense."
I had many discussions with my youngest when she was 3 1/2 this past year about whether boys could marry boys or girls could marry girls or what all the possible configurations could be. She has even asked if she can marry me and, separately, her older sister. Gay marriage makes perfect sense when you talk not about social expectations but about choosing a partner you love and want to spend your life with to build a family. As for my DD, I have been trying to convince her this is a decision she will make when she is older and she does not need to identify who she is going to marry quite yet.
I am a married straight parent, but I want my children to grow up sensitive to the fact that families come in many configurations and we have friends and neighbors with many different family make-ups.
