I'm 35, husband is 37 and we both love the show. There are very few elements of the show that mirror my early 20s life, but I still find it clever and enjoyable to watch.

They are in the industry, as are the parent(s) of the other three stars of the show. I think the numerous, wide ranging discussions sparked by this show demonstrate that they could, in fact, get their shit together when they needed to. No argument that they got an opportunity because of their relations-- and that bugs me-- but Girls is a provocative, relevant, generationally insightful TV drama. HBO isn't going to create and air a show that isn't terrific to watch. Lena Dunham and her castmates deserve their accolades. (. . . So I declare, even as I resent the disparity of opportunity between Dunham and the many talented children of Nobodies.)

I realize this particular post is over a year old, but I must point out that you've conflated the character with the writer. They are not the same. Lena Dunham, as an accomplished, Emmy winning writer at the age of 26, has the generational (and other?) awareness to write about a character who fucks up when she sticks her finger in a guy's ass during their first sexual encounter together.

I think what people don't realize is that a big part of Lena dunhams writing/character is the embracing of the hipster lifestyle/attitude. I have about 10 years on her but was a hipster (equivalent) back in the day and can completely relate 1000%. The girls looked like that, dressed like that and it was a time when piercing a everywhere were cool and tattoos were the norm.

OP, thanks for your post. I thought it was only me.

If you see her talking about the show after it's on she looks much more put together. She's in character on the show - obviously - and I think it's fantastic to see such a regular looking woman on a major television show. The other 3 women are also on the spectrum of regular people. Allison Williams is the most attractive, but even she seems more 'normal' than some of the Hollywood types we see all the time. I'm always amazed when I watch a British TV show or movie at how the actors and actresses look like the rest of us. So refreshing.
