Safer than what? Bikers are much safer without cars around! And so are pedestrians. Faster, more convenient, yes. Safer, no way.

That really is no different then turning out in front of an oncoming car causing them to slow down (or slam on their brakes?). Did you almost have a collision? Slowing down is not a big deal, almost having a collision is. If he was close enough to slap your car, you may have cut in front of him too close.

Yep, 11:37 sounds like you were completely in the wrong here.

You need to move to Portland, Oregon. Cyclist heave. (Though there was woman killed on her bike last night. However I think you DH has an abnormally high accident rate.)

I agree. I commuted 12 miles RT (Arlington to 20th & L) for 3 years and then 28 miles RT (Franconia to 20th & K) for 3 years. As you can imagine, a great part of the commute was on roads. In all that time, I only had one accident and that was when a Tupperware container somehow came off my bike rack and got stuck between the rack and the back wheel. I was clipped into the pedals, had slowed to hop a curb, tried to pedal to accelerate and basically came to a dead halt and fell over - still clipped into the pedals. Didn't break anything but went out and got panniers the very next day.

You're DH has had way too many accidents. If he insists on riding still, you should only agree if you can bump up his life insurance policy significantly - I'm not joking. (and i'm really sorry)

Does he have any friends who are bikers too? I'd ask them to have the 'safe practices' discussion with him because I'm sure they are like 'WTF' too, and he might take it better coming from them.
