Actually, DCPS requires a senior thesis for graduation - it's part of the English requirement (though probably ill-enforced). And the DC State Board of Education is considering whether to reinstate a senior capstone project or thesis as a stand-alone graduation requirement.

Far from being arbitrary torture, demanding assignments that require research, reflection, and public presentation and 'defense' are actually strong preparation for the demands of college and workplace -- which no one breaks down big assignments into manageable bits and makes sure each benchmark gets met in time to ensure completion of the final product.

Students told judges this year about what they'd learned from the experience and a lot said time management. Definitely a plus for success in college and work, where you'll encounter easy and tough judges and professors and bosses. Besides, by the time the projects are judged, students already know where they're going in the fall, so it's strong preparation for the next step with relatively low consequences.

As for the odious comparisons between schools - while some A or B Wilson students might earn a C at Walls, that would be the exception. If you look where both graduating classes are headed this fall, you'll see students from both schools going to Ivy League colleges, some with nice scholarships, too.

Anyone who calls Vermont and Temple 'crappy' clearly suffers from sour grapes - or has never been to either campus. You want crappy, check out some of single-digit 6-year graduation rates for DC-Tuition Assistance Grant students in some schools. It is interesting to read the several SWW threads that have popped up this year. It seems there really is no hope for DCPS high schools. This one is supposed to be the best but if the principal tries to crack down on drug use it's seen as an affront. The school assigns a normal high school project and it's maligned. Not sure what these families are looking for but it's really sad that this is the reaction to even minimal high school standards.
