Moderation in all things--my kids will mostly play and veg over the summer, but will do a little age-appopriate "maintenance" over the summer so that they will have an easier time of it in the fall. I am doing this not to put extra pressure or burdens on my kids, but to help them lighten the load during the school year by spending the summer making sure they are rock solid on the foundational skills they will need to do well in school.

Because I found a good source of guided curriculum, we are going to do the Romans and electricity. So about 4 hours a week will be dedicated to either exploring an experiment or reading up and making a poster or writing on a topic like roman architecture, words, myths, volcanoes and maybe government.
Something is very wrong with your children.
socially inept perhaps?
Don't they like physical activity? You do know childhood obesity is an epidemic, and sitting around all day for 75% of the summer is deadly.
How can you encourage this?
How dreadful!
Teabagger?

None of my kids struggle academically and if they did we might need to do it differently but given the kids we have - no academics over the summer. Our prep for the next school year is ensuring they are relaxed, stress free and full of good summer memories
My kids ask to go to school for about 6 weeks during the break. We oblige. They like this activity among their other summer activities. School is not for prep just fun.

My sweet dear- then what are you? A bimbo bible thumping teabagger?
Yeah, I don't understand this, either. Nobody's talking drill and kill Tiger Mom, just stuff to either keep the academic routine going during summer, or to focus specifically on areas where kids are having some difficulty.
