We do have in investment property in NW. If we sold it we could buy something else--but the rowhouse is such a great $ generator and year-round, hassle-free rental unit that it doesn't make sense to sell it.
Yup, that's us. And I know others with flexible jobs who do the same. I am at my beach house right now (although apparently not working!) and will be here for about 6-7 weeks this summer. I will have 2 trips back to DC, both kid related rather than work related.

Lived here my whole life. Never met one person who would stay at any local beach for the whole summer or even care too. With the exception of when we were in high school and college. Plenty of that thing going on.

Only the very, very wealthy (or those that inherited a beach house from a wealthy relative) can afford to summer anymore. Also, it makes more sense in NYC and Boston when the hamptons, the cape and Maine are so close.
My family summered when I was growing up at my grandparents place in cape may, nj. Sadly, they had to sell the house to pay for long term care (and lucky for them, that they were able to use such an asset to take care of themselves). We will never be able to afford that lifestyle.
