Probably not going to work for your situation, but for others reading, I think the best donuts are those sold at the bar The Standard on 14th street.

Donuts are not made in the actual store - they are shipped in from a bakery somewhere and they are not fresh. Up in New England, the donuts are made fresh in the store multiple times a day which makes them a lot better.

They are made fresh at the one on Columbia Pike north of Glebe, btw. They ship to other stores.

I'm from Georgia and I agree with the KK poster. DD donuts are just dry and dense to me. A hot Krispy Kreme is a thing of heaven. Crispy warm sugar on the outside, and the dough is so light it practically melts in your mouth. We would drive to Krispy Kreme on weekend mornings when I was little and wait for that "Hot Doughnuts" sign to come on and then run inside immediately to grab fresh donuts. DD will just never compete.


I'm originally from Pittsburgh and I'm not a fan of KK. Too sweet and not a fan of the texture of the dough. If I want something like that, PA Dutch funnel cake is far superior. If I want a doughnut, I'd prefer DD or something else. But then I like unsweetened tea and abhor sweet tea. I'm sure all the KK fans prefer sweet tea, too.


Wrong. I prefer almost any baked good fresh, like hot KK off the belt, as opposed to something that's been sitting around for a day. FWIW, I hate sweet tea and drink my coffee w/o sugar, thank you very much!

Unfortunately, unless they have changed, they don't make the donuts there. They are shipped in from Alexandria. But a hot, glazed KK donut still is pretty darn good.

And for the record, I'm not from the South and I, for one, think KK donuts, fresh from the belt, are awesome!

I think it may be a regional thing, the preference. I am from Rhode Island and while I think DD is sort of okay, there is a doughnut store called Allie's that is...pure bliss. And it is their cake doughnuts that are so good, rather than the raised doughnuts KK is known for. Oh, to have a hot Allie's old fashioned doughnut...

The original shop is in Ocean City and they have some reason for the name - a long time resident of the area, blah, blah. Despite that, I think part of their "fail" in moving to other locations was the name. It was too weird, had nothing to do with doughnuts and people couldn't figure out what kind of business it was. I think they had a good concept though.
