This. OP, you and your son realize this joke was not about YOU, literally, right? THe fact that you mentioned your size tells me that you don't understand "yo mama" jokes. You could be a size 2 and the kids might have used the same joke. It sounds like the teacher was trying to diffuse the situation with humor and teach your son some resilience. He was trying to point out the absurdity of the joke to your son by saying the Titanic sank 100 years ago. In other words, "why do you care what they say? Obviously they are being ridiculous." Perhaps it wasn't the best approach, but I don't see anything in your post that seems like the teacher is "encouraging bullying".

Interesting this was brought up after 2 1/2 years.
Schools do treat parents differently.
Not too long ago, I was trying to make an appointment with a teacher in our HRCS. I called the front office many times from home, was acknowledge politely by ast name ( my last name must have showed up) and was put on hold for about 10 minutes every time before getting disconnected. I do understand it's a school , and things can get busy; but I was calling during the day, not first thing in the morning or during dismissal. So I tried to outsmart the receptionist. I borrowed my co-workers's mobile phone, called and was able to make an appontment in less than 2 minutes giving my middle name.

Also, straight up, I wouldn't want my 11 yo in a class with 14 year olds. That's a HUGE age gap at that level, IMO.

Just because the teacher did not speak up at that time, does not mean she did not take action. If she had jumped to your son's defense, the bullies would have taunted him later about that. She may have taken action that you do not know about.
