I'll bite. I'm a pediatric ER doc. I work 32 hours a week (two 16 hour shifts basically), no call, and clear about 200K a year. I'm in my 40's, so I've been in the game for a bit. I usually walk in the door on Wednesday and walk out the door on Thursday evening (with a cat nap in between the two shifts).

I made a bit more when I worked more, but I cut back now that I have kids that are getting older.

The trick in medicine is to balance the length of residency with having kids. I had my first at 28, second at 31 and third at 33. I'm pretty much done now and am enjoying the balance of seeing the kids fairly often while getting a break by working.

DH works a more 9-6 type job with the government, so the flexibility cannot be beat. And I actually don't mind overnights

The vast majority of people are going to think, oh, they make so much. But they will have NO idea of the daily stress and long hours (on our feet) with no food. Hours in the OR with one case 6, 7 hours standing, not able to see our kids.

Most Doctors sit in a chair all day take regular breaks and charge 100s of dollars to each patient

...and they bitch about the cost of malpractice insurance. I think the real money comes from those that come from a place of " we don't take your insurance ". They typically volunteer marginally and take one insurance plan so they don't look like total a$$holes. There are not to be confused with the physicians who went into medicine to actually help people.

Thank you to all the doctors AND their spouses who did not fall into this trap. The bragging in DC is huge. The competition and comparisons are shameful. Some things are private and should stay that way.

My understanding of how doctors do their job is that it is by interacting with patients, they do not sit in front of a computer all day and thus they don't have a lot of time to interact on the interwebs. As one of the many lawyers on DCUM, I can multitask with email, shopping, DCUM, and my work when not crazy busy.

Also, to the internist who makes 180K working every other week, what are the days like in your work week, that sounds like a great schedule.

Doctors' salaries vary so much depending on the practice, the specialty, and the location. An orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in spine and is in a busy private practice versus one who specializes in pediatrics and working for an academic institution make salary that can be $650K different. They both did the same 5 year residency plus a year of fellowship, yet salary varies by so much. So fishing for this kind of information to get a general baseline isn't very helpful.
