Did you ever help you preschooler to select baby pictures to share with the class or make an all about me poster? Did help your preschooler select their favorite book for the class? Have you ever helped your preschooler pick out on object of a certain color or starting with a certain sound to share with their class? Did you ever read to your preschooler? Did you ever help your preschooler select pajamas to wear to pajama day?

If you answered yes to any of them you have done preschool homework with your child...

Yes, exactly! It's just not always given out under the title of homework, but that's exactly what it is. And I'm sure none of them would have any issues with this kind of homework, but God forbid a teacher ask their child to practice their letters, or cut out a few pictures for the letter of the week, and use the term homework and you would think the world is coming to an end.

Why do you feel preschoolers need any type of 'assignments' at all? Soon people will be advocating for 'assignments' in toddlerhood, and then infancy. Any school that is assigning homework at such an early age should be able to provide sound evidence about why they feel it is necessary or beneficial. Seriously. It's absurd, it's wrong, and it's pushing your child into a mold and frame of thought that just makes no sense. Have you ever stopped to consider for even a minute that whatever is being 'assigned' to your child, may not be something they're even ready to process, or something that they're even interested in? Children develop at such different paces. Do you know if the homework is differentiated for each child, or is the same 'assignment' just slapped onto the whole class, in a 'one size fits all,' type of manner. Homework, or 'assignments' (or whatever the heck you want to call them,) can wait until the older grades, and you'll be doing your child a huge favor if you're able to recognize that and advocate for it.

They do provide the reason: To enhance what's being taught in the classroom. Your argument is a bad one. The playing field is NEVER going to be level. Children are ALWAYS going to learn at different paces, be it in preschool, elementary school, middle school, or beyond. You can't expect teachers to tailor assignments for each and every child in the classroom just to ensure they "get it" at their own pace. I feel sorry for your snowflake's future teachers, as I can see you are going to be the type who constantly argues against structured learning. Better start saving for private school stat.

Educate yourself.

That's just one person's research. It doesn't make it the be-all and end-all, as otherwise there would be no homework in preschool.

Then you had better not bother with preschool, since most around here assign homework. And I see no issues with it. In DD's pre-K class, the kids have a letter of the week, so one night need to look for three photos that start with that letter. They paste them in a notebook and label them. Parents read a book on another night and the kids have to draw a scene in their notebook from the story. And they have a box of sight words that they practice over the weekends. None of this is time-consuming and DD loves the learning process so always looks forward to homework. The school also allows kids to check out books they can read to their parents, then the parents initial that the child has read the book to them. The words in the books are simple and there are only about 5 pages of really short sentences. All of this just serves to get the kids excited about learning. DD is so excited to read her books to us; the enthusiasm is contagious! It's not about grades or being competitive, at least not at this age, but rather learning for the sake of learning. I wish this was the case once this kids got older, as maybe then they would continue to love the educational process rather than loathe it.

Really?? This is the first I've ever heard of a preschool assigning homework. Ours doesn't. I asked various friends and none of theirs do either. And I agree with the PP - I would not have chosen/stayed at a preschool that assigned homework. Ridiculous.

I have never even heard of preschool homework and hope not to become part of social circles where it is done. Crazy talk.

I love my kid's preschool. Every 4-6 weeks they send home family homework, which is usually something to decorate any way you want for it to be hung up in the hallway. I have skipped the family homework twice (once because we so busy moving, and once because my DH was out of town...Wait, why am I explaining...) and the teachers never said a word! I love them!

NO FUCKING WAY IS MY 2 YEAR OLD DOING HOMEWORK! Has the world gone entirely mad? Hell no, I am not spending a single second of my valuable evenings dealing with preschool homework. I think this is the most ludicrous thing I have read in a while.

My kids are in a full day daycare with a preschool curriculum and they have never had homework either.
