I gained a lot of weight with my second child and I adopted a preppy/classic look then because it was hard to deal with. Preppy definitely is easier to shop and wear than a lot of other styles if you're feeling self-conscious about your weight.

Stuff that I worked with:

Basics
1) no-iron button down shirts from Eddie Bauer. These come in extended sizes. The quality is very good.
2) cardigan sweaters from Land's End. These are the best quality cardigans that I've found.
3) plain tshirts by Polo. I buy these on Ebay because they are cheaper.
4) pants from Land's End
5) jeans from Ralph Lauren. I get them from Macy's.
6) ballet flats or driving mocs or Toms to wear most days.
7) a little black dress and heels for going out. (I don't go out much.)

I also buy stuff from Brooks Brothers, Lilly Pulitzer, and Ralph Lauren. Their sizes run out to 14-16 and they have some cute stuff. Lilly and Brooks Brothers run sales on-line a couple of times a year. Macys runs sales on Ralph Lauren all the time.

I especially like Brooks Brother for dressier clothes and dresses.

I don't wear a ton of Lilly Pulitzer, but I do love it for accessories. It provides a nice pop of color.

A vanity 14 = plus size
A regular 14 = not plus size

Not sure why someone would revive this thread after 2 years but funny to look back at this comment. Shortly after I posted this I lost 30 lbs and have kept it off. Now a size 10. And still wear white jeans.

I would say talbots, also not everything but Banana Republic also!

OP I think it depends on what you mean by preppy. I don't think American classic is preppy just more tailored, and conservative. I see preppy as either Talbots, middle aged women or hard core preppy with things like nautical themes, embroided whales on corduroy pants, polo shirts, mom jean style pants. I don't think hard care preppy is flattering on anyone because the cuts are dated. I'm also not a fan of the cardigan/tank or flowing tunic shirt and elastic waist pants with Talbots etc.

I think more conservative, American, NY style is most flattering to all figures. Flat front black pants, tailored shirts or sweaters (thin cahsmere or silk nothing bulky) in neutrals, no ruffles, no pleats, no floral or prints, buy the right size, don't go to tight and shapers underneath to make sure nothing puffs out.

According to most posters on DCUM, size 14 is obese. Haven't you seen all the antifat threads? There's even one on Off Topic that keeps cropping up. Most of the posters on that one insist that size 12 is huge.

These threads always crack me up. I was a size 8 through high-school, eating whatever I wanted and working out 2.5 hours every day (varsity sports). I'm a size 10/12 now, after 2 children in 2 years. Yeah, I'm a real hoss. Sign me up for fat camp. Whatever people. Find something real to bitch about.
