Ah, damn, you're right. The HJC voted and passed articles of impeachment, but not the House.

I don't think so. I remember that that came up a lot during Clinton's impeachment - Andrew Johnson was the only other impeached president.

Correction: articles of impeachement passed the House, so he was officially "impeached". But Nixon quit because the Republican leadership of the Senate let him know in no uncertain terms that 2/3rds of the Senate were ready to remove him from office.

Pretty funny that wingnuts still argue that Nixon was "persecuted" given that the evidence was on tape that he was personally involved in a criminal conspiracy. To further your education, Nixon *resigned*. And the reason he resigned was that members of his own party told him they would have no choice but to vote to impeach. Poor victims.

You are mixing up issues. One issue is whether Nixon committed acts that were worthy of impeachment. A second issue is whether a Democrat would have been impeached for committing the same acts. You also suggest that a Democratic congress would not have impeached a Democrat, yet don't discuss whether a Republican Congress would have ignored Nixon's transgressions or, for example, the Republican Congress' impeachment of Clinton was politically motivated.

The OP's complaint was really about people like you.

Do you seriously believe Nixon was simply impeached as a result of Democratic hostility to his political positions? Do you have any understanding at all of the legal transgressions that occurred under his administration? Your one-sided presentation of the "facts" and your concomitent declaration that this is the "end of story" is a perfect example of the OP's complaint about "people who insist loudly that their opinions are correct even though they have no idea what they are talking about?". Thanks for providing a conservative example to go with the liberal example the OP initially presented.

Right now there is a post in the political forum which says that Romney shouldn't have run for president if he didn't pay his taxes.


I've read that post (and the subsequent comments) and that's not the argument being made. I believe the argument is best characterized as saying one shouldn't vote for Romney because he fully supports these policies, is a poster boy for their effects, and that such policies are corrosive to American values.

I could be wrong, in which case I hope you'll quote the PP who claimed Romney should be barred from being a candidate.

I would add:

Relentless indoctrination into a series of soundbites meant to stand for foundational myths/ sacred principles whose substance 99% of people neither bother to understand nor question (eg. "the intent of the founders"--founders intended the constitution to adapt to the times, "free market"--we do not live under anything even remotely close to what qualifies as a free market in economics, "freedom" and "rights"--the words most frequently raped in American English, etc.). I guess that's an outgrowth of A and D.
