My mom was a great cook, I still miss her cooking. When she died, somehow all her great recipes got lost on her computer. I remember as a child not liking lamb chops (still don't) but I don't remember if she forced me to eat them. However, I have the most vivid memories of her insisting my sister eat spinach, which my sister HATED! I still don't understand why she made (or tried to make) my sister eat something she hated. I also learned that small fluffy white dogs don't like spinach either.

As a child in the 70s I didnt think this was that gross but not only would I never eat it now, I would never make it for my kids. -- spam and velveeta broiled on wonder bread! We had a meat grinder that attached to the counter and she would mix it together. It would come out in paste form she would slather on the bread, under the broiler and lunch was made.

I still give her a hard time about it today.

For me it is only partially about the ethics of eating, I just absolutely HATE meat and always have. Worse, my mom was the worst cook! She'd make steak, and it would be so well done that it took days to chew. I wasn't allowed to drink anything but whole milk and I hated it. So I'd get this huge bolus of meat in my mouth, and chew and chew and chew until I started gagging, then try to choke it down with milk. And, fwiw, I have a condition that causes extremely high iron levels and I am lactose intolerant. So thanks for that, mother.

*As you may guess, what I was forced to eat is the least of the problems I have with my mother!

OMG. She made you eat meat and milk? What a monster.

It is fairly monstrous to make the lactose intolerant drink milk. I was five when I made it stop. The trauma of drinking milk stayed with me for another thirty years.

Did anyone have a dad who cooked crap meals?

Pasta Primavera.

Ordinarily a very good dish, but not so much when made by my mom. Think undercooked veggies mixed with curdled milk, burnt cheese, and pasta I could only wish was al dante.

The worst was pulled bar-b-que beef with huge chunks of pineapple in it that was served on a white hamburger bun. The sauce and the pineapple were awful together. I couldn't eat pineapple or anything with a a bar-b-que flavor (even chips) until college. The thought of it still makes me gag. She was a terrible cook.

My mom was on about a six month kick where we had to have a spoonful of cod liver oil every day. That was so foul and our gagging didn't seem to have an effect.

She was also a fan of those boil in bag frozen dinners from Stouffers. Creamed chipped beef was the worst. My dad, who wa in the navy, told us that we would be big and strong if we ate the Shit on a Shingle.

On the plus side of our redneck diet, he did make some awesome fried bologna!

Undercooked turkey and overcooked vegetables floating in butter.

Thankfully the worst thing I had to eat was spam...some of you PPs were subjected to some serious food torture. I don't get the mentality of forcing kids to eat nasty shit they don't want to eat. The more you force them the less likely they will be to eat it. At my table you eat what you want and that's that. I would literally vomit if someone tried to force me to eat something I didn't want to eat...particularly if it were seafood or organ meet or had a particularly objectionable smell.

Succotash. She knew I hated lima beans, but somehow thought that the corn and carrots (or whatever other veggies were in there) would disguise them. It didn't. But that wasn't as bad as when she started making things with canned salmon. The kind with the bones still in it. I could at least pick out the lima beans, but those little salmon bones were everywhere.

If you want to be really grossed out, there's a website out there that has pictures of recipe cards from weight watchers from the 70's (I think). They are hilarious and horrifying.

My mom made me choke down orange pulp. In a soup bowl.

She has an inordinate amount of concern about... um, regularity. Now that I'm an adult I can recognize how messed up her pre-occupation with taking laxatives and strictly scheduling meals for nailing optimal pooping time targets has always been. But yeah, if I failed to follow her schedule, it was a big bowl of orange guts for me.

For dinner? I can see that naturally for breakfast but no matter how little money you have, that's strange for dinner. How about some rice and beans? Or grilled cheese with a can of soup?
