NP here. I wear my wedding band on my right hand, and I'm a North American woman.

I'd assume he's married and not make an ass of yourself.

Why would you assume he's gay? I know three married couples. All wear their wedding rings on their left hands.

We wore ours the first 5 years or so, then realized we just aren't jewelry people. I wear earrings but only because I don't take them off except to clean them once a month.

I would assume if a person does not have their ring on the left that they are available. You should ask. Worst case he'll say no, he's taken.

By his boyfriend.

Plain gold band, not a college ring. Is this a new thing, and if so what is the significance? Widow? Gay? Dammit!

It's a very old thing in fact. In Europe, it's more common for people to wear wedding rings on their right hands. My friend who is married to a belgian man wears her engagement ring on her left hand and her wedding ring on her right hand as a compromise. I think it's sweet!

European or other non-American. Though my American husband wore his on his right for about 6 months following surgery on a finger in his left. Point being, there are many reasons to wear it on the right, all of which mean your hunky guy is taken!
