Wow my two boys wear Uggs and have been since age 1. They have never been teased and are not the only ones who wear them at our school. Maybe it's a city thug or private school thing or both. We are a family that cares about quality of clothes our children wear so we don't do cartoon character shirts like lots of boys I see. I dress them in things I think look good and we've always had tons of compliments on their style. Diff strokes. But I would say that at some point you just have I do what you want and not worry about what everyone else is doing.

My son had a pair when he was six and loved them--wore them out! He got them as hand-me-downs. He wants a new pair for xmas. Looking, but hard to find. Plenty of boys wear them around here. No big deal around here.

Most people that practice martial arts are a little weird anyway, so your son probably doesn't mind being different in wearing the uggs either.

I have found it quite funny that Ugg (or ugg type) boots are not sold in Michigan. Especially being a snowy winter state. I am originally from Calif and have worn men's Ugg boots for over 15 years. They're quite comfortable and keep my feet warm. Surfers wear them, skiers wear them to the lodge etc. Last year we got my daughter a pair for Christmas and also wanted to get our son a pair. I looked at almost every retail store that I could and I was only stared out like I was crazy when I asked for boys ugg's. I had to order them online. One day my son came home from school saying that he hated those boots and after asking why, he told me they were "girl boots and he was being teased about them". I explained about how odd it was that in this state, no one sells boys Ugg's but in other states they do. I told him, do you think that I wear "girl boots"? He said "no dad" but do you get teased? Well yes I do because people can tease about what they don't know and it's not their fault if they don't know that there are boys and men's Ugg boots.. I have had to explain to a couple people about men Uggs and that they're acceptable, I tell them to go on line and look into it that they will find them even on eBay.
I powered up my laptop and he and I went online where I showed him that they do make boys Ugg's. He asked me to print a copy out for him, which I gladly did. He wore his boots the next day to school and had his print out to show the person that had teased him. He now wears them with no issue and knows how to approach anyone that teases him about them. "they're not girl boots, GOOGLE boys Ugg boots and see".
I was questioned the other evening if I was wearing my wife's boots, I had to explain the sales of men"s Ugg's online.

DS always gets a new pair of classic uggs boots every yr since preschool. He's in elementary now and will get a new pair this yr. He loves them, no need for socks. Never been an issue.

People who limit their kid's choices in clothes, or any other form of individual expression, might want to take some time to question why they believe what they do. If it's not hurting anyone, let them be themselves and have some autonomy is their life. In downtown DC I've seen lots of boys wear Uggs. It doesn't to be an issue from what I've seen.

the boots are dad's idea. How is that giving the kid autonomy?

This is it. Kids can make fashion choices. We as parents shouldn't make tease-exposing choices for them. My kid makes some fairly hysterical choices, and sometimes gets teased. But they are HIS choices, and I make sure he goes in with eyes open.

I think that if your dh is putting this many rules on an obvious "fashion don't" he should just step away.

Very few boys wear uggs. I would only put a son of mine in them if the motivation came from the kid. (they make a statement on a boy --either gay, or baby -- and it isn't for me to make a fashion statement for him. Any statement, and he makes plenty, should be his own.)

No. It may be acceptable in other parts of the country, but it's not the norm is this area. Jr. High or High school may be OK if they want to be trendy since kids that age understand fashion better. Elementary kids will make fun of them either to their face or behind their back.

Very European. Have you not noticed a lot of guys wear tight t-shirts with tight jeans and leather looking loafers or shoes that look like bowling shoes? A couple years ago this could mean you were gay. But now I think guys are following old Euro looks.

But it doesn't sound like it's the kid who gives a crap about his boots, it's his dad who wants him to wear them.
