Went to OBX for the first time a couple of years ago with 2 and 4 yos. We loved it, but the key for us was (1) a nice house on the beach with a private pool and (2) being in Duck.

We also went right before high season (early June). It was nice but still pretty pricey.

I didn't think the drive was bad at all, but that's b/c we didn't have to spend much time on that god-awful 2 lane highway.

6 hours? You must live in Woodbridge.

From DC, it took almost 9, and the last 1.5 were spent parked on that ridiculous two-lane road. Seriously -- I considered getting out and walking, because I would have reached the house faster.

And it rained 3 days straight, which in OBX means you're stuck in a big house watching TV and doing puzzles unless you want to return to that ridiculous two-lane road and sit in traffic just to wander through dumb shops and eat an overhyped $6 hot dog.

Do. Not. Get. OBX.

Wow. I can't believe how the OBX is being slammed. We have been going there for 6 summers now. We have four under 8. We absolutely love it and the drive is just fine (never more than 6 hrs for us) if you are smart about it. To each their own but I just can't believe that OC is being talked up and OBX down. I do enjoy OC in the off season but during the summer, OBX hands down.

We literally drove around for no less than 45 minutes looking for parking just to get on the beach!
Once we got on the beach it was so insanely packed The people around had to scoot their things over so we even had room to sit our stuff out.
I'll drive the few extra hours (which isn't even longer if you add in the extra traffic to get over the bay bridge on a busy weekend) to be able to stretch out on the beach and have some extra room.
Plus we like that the water is so clear and warm in NC.
There are enough restaurants to go out a few nights

you do realize that Bethany is in Delaware, right?

Love OBX, Corolla specifically. Do a Sunday-to-Sunday, though, to avoid the worse traffic.

We've been going to VA Beach every year since 97 (before we had DD) and love it. We usually go in mid-August for a week. It's crowded but you can always find a good spot on the beach. It's clean and family friendly. We get time to spend on the beach, go to Busch Gardens, and Colonial Williamsburg. Never been to the Outer Banks though.

good stay out, you have no idea how to entertain yourself or fmaily without outside stimulation, let me guess you have never spent a few days without the TV on

You can do the same things in OC for less money and less time in the car. We have a place there so every time we go we don't feel the need to do everything (or anything). Mostly we crab and swim in the ocean.

We went to OBX (Corolla to be specific) for 4th of July weekend but did a Sunday-Sunday rental, which is key. Took us 6 hours with a stop for an early lunch. Took 5 hours coming home. Was there again this fall and it also took 5 hours both ways.

How long is the drive to OBX?

well, extrovert/introvert might be the wrong way to look at it. If you want a RESORT (albeit cheesy), then go to OC. Amusement parks, water parks, golf, family restaurants, bars, etc are all around you in OC. If you want to hang out in a huge house by yourself and spend a lot of time on the beach, then go to OBX.

Both are ok.

But don't go to OBX for anything less than a week. Drive is not worth it.

Bethany is quiet like the OBX, but closer to OC and Rehobeth and there is a little town you can walk to. There are few hotels though, so you need to rent a nice house and it is pricey.

Rehobeth Beach is a nice town, more upscale than OC. There is a big gay scene there FYI.

Outer Banks is the least touristy by far. Do you want peace or to be entertained?

IMO, Virginia Beach and OC are more suitable for the extraverted crowd.
OBX has fewer places for extroverts -- it's largely an introvert haven.
Been going to OBX (BY POPULAR DEMAND) for years w/ 4 elementary-aged kids.
The drive down is just part of our fun and adventure. I guess, in any case, wherever you go, it's what you make of it...
