Interesting. I see on their website that there is a garlic flavored cheese curd product which is exactly how I remember the aftertaste. If the brick cheese I ordered is not the right cheese, I'll have to order this one next!

The Wegman's locations that I called didn't have any brick cheese in stock (I am convinced now that this is what it is) but I found a producer out of Wisconsin that sells and ships it. So I ordered 3 kinds: the curds, the mild form and the specialty aged. Yes, I am a nut, but I will find that cheese dammit!

Is the cheese you're looking for Yancey's Fancy cheese?

Let us know the results if it was what you remembered. I've really enjoyed reading this thread. It's made me very nostalgic.

OP here and this made me laugh out loud, literally!

Making the Wegman's pilgrimage this week. I'm in MOCO so I have to actually drive out to VA to go to one which I have done in the past for sponge candy and CIAVETTA'S -- can't believe no one mentioned that yet. Who could drive around WNY in the summer without passing a "Field Day" with chix on the BBQ?

Don't go to VA OP -- come out to our Wegman's in PG County -- right off 495 at 202!

How do you and DH stand the stuck up people in DC? That was the biggest culture shock for me.

Yeah, ugh. Doesn't seem to bother DH as much as it does me, but I just don't know WHERE we are going to send our DS to school. He's only 2.5 now, but I have these images of him coming home demanding an iPhone or a laptop in Kindergarten. I really miss the simplicity of WNY living. There are plenty of smart, educated, well-to-do people up there, but there's something about that city of good neighbors idea that makes people friendlier and less obviously self-interested.

And to the person who said it has to do with being Irish, I'll totally get on board with that- I'm Irish.

Foods we routinely buy at Wegman's- Chiavetta's, Spiedie sauce (my parents are originally from CNY, so I grew up on this), Weber's mustard, Sahlen's hot dogs, and LARGE jugs of Franks. But of course now I'm totally intrigued by this cheese!!! We're lucky enough to be about a 25 minute drive from the new Wegman's in Lanham, and the traffic that way is never that bad unless there's a football game!

People from Western NY like people. (Maybe because a lot of us are Irish.) All kinds of people. We certainly grew up with a variety of them.

Thank you for this thread! I have no idea what this cheese is- but I just spent 2 weeks in the Buffalo area with my parents and in-laws, and ate all of the good stuff-- REAL pizza, wings, Anderson's beef on weck.... MMMMM. Gotta love home!

This list is awesome! Forgot about Anderson's for frozen custard (but I have the Dairy Godmother in Del Ray now), Ted's for hots was awesome (and right around the corner from my cousins) and who could say they are from Western New York without ever having eaten a garbage plate??? A must after any night in Ra-Cha-Cha.

Yes, and stopping by wegman's for bulk food! So ahead of it's time.
