Of course you should get it for her. You want to and she wants it. The fact that it is hers doesn't mean she can have unlimited play. You can limit her time with it just as you would limit her time with any other toy. PPs point out that she doesn't understand the cost/value. That cuts the other way too. She won't know she is being spoiled. She will have plenty of opportunities in her life to learn that she won't get everything she wants. It is OK for you to delight her this Christmas.

OP here: Yes - I called the device an iTouch as opposed to it's fully qualified name of iPod Touch. Geez - wasn't ready for the backlash! Thanks 20:48 - was simply looking for some general feedback - which I got so thanks DCUM! I'm curious - for those of you who vehemently disagree with this idea - how much are you spending on your DC this season? We typically get 1 really awesome present and a few extras. These kids are by no means spoiled... well except by grandparents. I'm just trying to figure out what the heck to get my kid who has soley requested this one non-PC gift. I could easily spend a few $100 on a silly car or any number of other toys she doesn't want.


OP, get over yourself. In your mind, you have completely justified this ridiculous gift for your two year old. So just buy it and be done with it. Why do you feel the need to come on here and try to get everyone to agree with you? Surely you knew before you posted that people would think this was completely over the top, yet you persist in trying to rationalize it to us.

We have my old iPod Touch (DH got me an iPad for my birthday last year) that mostly the kids play with already. But we discussed it and decided to NOT give it to DD who is 5 as an Xmas gift this year because it's too expensive and we like that it's something that does not belong to her so playing with it is a rare privilege as opposed to a right (with appropriate limits, clearly). I'd say buying a new one is overkill. If you really have your heart set on it, see if you can find a used one somewhere.

Let's see - I'm getting my 3 y.o. a few princess wands ($5-8 each) and some new foods & related items for her toy kitchen. Woo hoo! She'll probably end up in therapy because I didn't get her anything "big".

I agree with this. It isn't about the money so much as it is about the appropriateness. It's like a 17 year old driving a really expensive sports car. Even if parents can afford it and it is "practical" in a sense, it just seems off.

Your child is not even 3. She will not remember this Christmas forever as the Christmas where she did not get an ipod. She will probably forget about it in 2 weeks. One "really awesome present" as you say is probably something ridiculous, so your kids may well be spoiled, you just don't realize it.

Of course your child wants a gaming device. So does EVERY OTHER child. Those things are like crack to small children. Hold off on the apps as long as you can. She will be fine over the next few years without her own personal ipod.

it's not the money, it's the idea of giving a kid -- no, a toddler -- who's not even 3 a high-end electronic device.

I didn't want to spend $$ on it, so my cousin gave me his three-generations-ago iPhone. We use it as an iTouch for long car rides and when we're eating at a restaurant. So do I think you're crazy? No. Would I want to spend the $$ on a 3 year old's gift? No.
