DH and I went to the same 2 schools for grad and undergrad so we used to have plates with the initials of both universities (which doesn't seem much different to me than a university license plate holder) but I probably wouldn't do any other kind of personalization.

I have a junker car that I've been driving for 15 years, when I'm ready to get rid of it I've always told my DH I'm just going to slam into some asshole with vanity plates.

So look out.

My friend's dad had a Delorean, and his plate was BK2FUTR. I thought that was pretty funny. Saw a dentist's plate once that was DR2THDK. Thought that was funny. If they're not funny, I tend to think they're lame.

I have one that memorializes my deceased brother. I don't care if anyone thinks it's cheesy and/or trashy. It makes me think of him every time I see it. No one would know what it means unless they asked.

I'm a woman and have one, for my favorite sports team. I get compliments about it ALL THE TIME.

I think the rest of the plates are pretty stupid though.

Exactly! Grow a mullet if you like. America's about the freedom to be cheesy.

I am surprised by all the negative responses given the prevalence of them in this area.

We don't have them and wouldn't get them. We just take whatever the state issues us, but we're cheap like that.

I want one for my new car, DH is laughing out loud about this.

Do you have one? What does it say?

Pathetic. Cheesy. Your DH is right, listen to him.

Pretty cheesy, IMHO. But less tacky than folks with adhesive "memorials" to their loved ones stuck to their cars. Seriously? Just how car-oriented must your life be if you think *that's* an appropriate way to honor a departed loved one?
