You seem simple.
The dad was not flying the plane. He was sitting with the kids.
The airspace for that area is such that you barely go over the top of the mountains before you are entering federal commercial airspace. You have to either ask permission to fly higher and enter federal airspace, go around the mountain, or fly over the top of the mountain in the allowed airspace. It appears the pilot attempted the last option, but it was nighttime, and he was flying without the aid of air traffic control. Likely, he did not see the mountain in time or did not realize how tall it was, or underestimated his plane's ability to gain the altitude necessary to clear the mountain. It was an accident; the dad had nothing to do with it. You could try READING the news reports once in awhile, you know.
