As for local dives, the Greek Deli is a must.

Komi--must plan for this one.
Ben's Chili Bowl-- I just love the chili cheese fries.
2 Amy's-- yummy pizza (but I also like the pizza at Sette in Dupont, though this completely depends on the pizziaolo working).
Taqueria Distrito Federal--it's a little dive-y if you're cool with that.
Kushi--something different and very hip/young/fun.
Ray's Hell Burger--Obama went, so don't we all have to? It's actually quite good.
Cork--wine bars are a bit played out but I enjoy the atmosphere and have always had an easy meal here.
Birch & Barley-- it was the toast of the town when it opened, it's pretty fun and a nice price point for the meal.
PS7's-- love eating at the bar/lounge area. Amazing cocktails!
Um, no (and I'm a Democrat).
We took the kids to this place called Serendipity in NYC because so many people recommended it. Most disgusting, overpriced meal we ever had for which we waited (I kid you not) 3 hours.
Later we found out that it's a huge hit because High School Musical or some other group along those lines was filmed there, or something.
I like this list (with the exception of Cork, which I find to be overrated). I'd add Palena Cafe for roast chicken, the best burger in the city, and other great casual dishes.
And to the poster who claims her home cooking is as good as Komi, CityZen, Citronelle, et al. - far be it for me to call you a liar, but . . . well, that's complete BS. If you're so talented, please get a job in a restaurant so the rest of us aren't deprived of access to your cooking. Otherwise, if you have nothing to contribute, feel free to not contribute.
I did not say my cooking tastes just the same as at these restaurants, only that my cooking tastes "as good" to me, enough that I don't need to pay those prices to get the same amount of enjoyment. This is all subjective, obviously. I was replying to the postrer who said to me that for me it was all about money and not about food. No, I enjoy good food, but I don't have to pay ridiculous prices to do so.
Probably because I'm a pretty good cook, I prefer to eat at home than to eat out at hyped-up restaurants that charge several times what it would costs for me to make the same dish. I guess it's true I am not their intended customer: someone who does not know the value of a dollar.

I am serious, and seriously not thrilled with the overpriced and overrated restaurants in the DC area.
You're obviously not their intended customer if you only like crap food.
