Consumer Checkbook compares the prices at all the local grocery stores, including Wegman's, and Wegman's easily beats out Safeway or Giant.

as a native to the area where Wegman's was born (and someone who consequently grew up thinking that's what grocery stores were like generally), I think the hype has to do with the fact that you can get ANYTHING you want at Wegman's (organic or not, frou frou or not), the prepared food is great, and the stuff is of a high quality. Over the last couple of weeks, I've gotten spoiled deli meat at Harris Teeter and spoiled ground turkey at Giant. I wouldn't expect that at Wegman's.

"I'll take my local Safeway anyday."

YUCK, I hate the smell of their chicken cooking every time you walk into one of their stores. The lines are awful.

Maybe it's because I went after lunch and wasn't hungry.

Not sure about Safeway, but I spend a lot less at Wegman's then I do if I was to do my former Giant/Whole Foods run (buying the same things). And it's nice going to one store instead of two.

I don't use the "bus" shopping carts. I use the mini ones (you can actually cram quite a bit of stuff in that thing). Never been to the one in Fairfax, but if you go during "off" times (in the mornings or late evenings) they aren't that busy.
