Was the Dad verbally abusive? Absolutely and I think his cursing and hateful tone was abhorrent. But did he *beat* her? No.
And yes, I would spank my teenager in this manner (minus the verbal abuse and for only a fraction of the time of this spanking) if a spanking was necessary. Of course, my children were spanked when they were younger, so now that they are older (2 in their teens), I don't have to spank them as a form of discipline.
People like you are sick. You would spank your teenager with a belt and tell him/her to bend over the bed? That is sick.
And your logic that "because my kids were spanked when they were younger" means that they don't need to be spanked is also sick. My kids (who admittedly are only in elementary school) have never been spanked and behave great at home, at school, etc., with very few exceptions. I find it sick that you think the only way you can get children to behave is to BEAT them (I say beat, and not spank, b/c clearly you have BEATEN your children with belts and only god knows what else).
Actually, it's people like you who are sick. People who jump to crazy and outlandish conclusions to support their argument.
Yes, I would spank my teenager with a belt. No, I would not verbally abuse him/her (or, in your faux outrage, did you miss that in my post?). But this is a moot point, because my teens are well-behaved.
Yes, I spanked them when they were younger. Usually with a swat on the behind. When you enforce discipline early, children learn the parameters of what is good and unacceptable behavior.
Not all children respond the same to all forms of discipline. Spanking was never my first disciplinary option....not sure why you're presuming otherwise (is it to support your faux outrage, again?).
I was spanked with a belt as a child. Hold no ill thoughts towards my Mom, am not afraid of her and respect her totally. Some folks will curse and be plain disrespectful in front of their parents when they reach adulthood; I would never disrespect my mother in that way.

Where do I say "a simple spanking"? BTW, spankings are supposed to hurt. If you don't spank or believe in spanking, then you and I will probably not agree on this issue.
If you think that video was simply a "spanking" of a 16 year old girl, then you have some serious mental health issues. I am dead serious about that.
Oh, please.
Must be nice to be so cavalier about causing your children physical pain. Trust me, you have failed as a parent if you have to resort to hitting your children to get them to behave.

beat? ?[beet] verb, beat, beat·en or beat, beat·ing, noun, adjective
verb (used with object)
1. to strike violently or forcefully and repeatedly.
I believe this qualifies as a beating.
But, to be fair, from the same source:
spank1? ?[spangk] verb (used with object)
1. to strike (a person, usually a child) with the open hand, a slipper, etc., especially on the buttocks, as in punishment.
IMO, spanking is milder than beating, and only done with a hand.
